Project "Conserving Landscape Systems in Ecotourism Development for Ethnic Minority Communities in Vietnam"

WHERE WE WORK

Van Ho is a district located in Son La Province in the Northwest of Vietnam. The district has abundant forest resources, with many rare and precious plant and animal species. It is a diverse and beautiful district with mountains, waterfalls, streams and hot springs.

Van Ho serves as a gateway connecting Northwest provinces with Hanoi and the Red River Delta region.

WHO WE WORK WITH

The people of Van Ho are mostly ethnic minority groups who live in small communities who rely on farming and the forest for their livelihoods.  Local communities include the Thai, Muong, Mong, Dao, Kinh and Tay people. The communities are realizing that integrating tourist development with farming and forestry will improve their livelihoods and preserve the natural beauty of the area.

WHAT WE DO

TABA is assisting local communities to develop an ecotourism model that has a focus on conserving the natural landscape ecosystem. The Agricultural Heritage Village model (Agritage), developed by TABA,  will serve as a prototype for ecotourism villages in Van Ho.

The project, supported by the Embassy of Finland, includes conducting research on community-based tourism models.  In addition, TABA is providing training to the communities of Van Ho to enhance awareness in ecotourism and conservation, including developing the business skills of communities.  TABA is also working to create linkages between the Van Ho communities and businesses specializing in community-based tourism.
